Each year, cars seem to get more and more complicated. Cars today might have as many as 50 microprocessors on them. Although these microprocessors make it more difficult for you to work on your own car, some of them actually make your car easier to service.
Before emissions laws were enacted, it was possible to build a car engine without ECU’s. With the enactment of increasingly stricter emissions laws, sophisticated control schemes were needed to regulate the air/fuel mixture so that the catalytic converter could remove a lot of the pollution from the exhaust. Controlling the engine is the most processor-intensive job on your car, and the engine control unit (ECU) is the most powerful computer on most cars.
The ECU uses closed-loop control, a control scheme that monitors outputs of a system to control the inputs to a system, managing the emissions and fuel economy of the engine (as well as a host of other parameters). Gathering data from dozens of different sensors, the ECU knows everything from the coolant temperature to the amount of oxygen in the exhaust. With this data, it performs millions of calculations each second, including looking up values in tables, calculating the results of long equations to decide on the best spark timing and determining how long the fuel injector is open. The ECU does all of this to ensure the lowest emissions and ability to compensate for poor fuel grades and climatic conditions.
In otherwords, alot of these calculations are made to compensate for poor fuel grades and bad servicing, thus it has been intentionally detuned. This results in lower power output and poor responsiveness.

All calculation data is stored on the ECU as maps, written in hexadecimel. NVM have the ability to read the maps(via the OBD port) and translate them into tables of useability such as RPM, LOAD, MAP, CTS etc. With all this raw data translated we can modify each parameter to increase performance and throttle response. With R&D the extent of these modifications can be done within safe margins.
When we remap a vehicle ECU we are fine tuning the maps that control the engines performance. As well as producing more torque and power we also solve driveability problems such as low rev ranges that have flat spots and hesitation issues giving the engine much more torque which also results in a more responsive and enjoyable vehicle to drive overall.
When one of our technicians upgrade your car, we start first with an initial ECU diagnostics check. This will show any errors found by the ECU within your engine. If faults are found, our technicians will investigate the problem and report back to you prior to any upgrading. It is imperitive that your engine has no major faults before the remap as these will only be exaggerated by the remap. Not many companies offer this diagnosis and tracing, as they have not got the knowledge to do so. With over 10 years experience in computer aided fault diagnosis and working with some of the worlds largest car manufacturers, we can provide the reassurance that every customer looks for in this industry. ECU remapping is more than just modification of files, its knowing the limits and understanding the ability of an ECU.
Once you and the technician are both happy with the outcome of fault diagnosis he/she will proceed to download existing MAP data from your cars ECU. With this it can be translated for us to modify as necessary. Only working with your cars original raw file we then proceed. Not using generic files or copied files that many other companies wish to use.
Our Stage 1 upgrade is fairly straight forward, increasing parameters to within tolerances and fuel grade. If you have custom engine work i.e different cams, compression ratio changes etc then we will proceed with a custom remap to suit your engines blueprint. This will take a different route as many rolling road or road tuning is necessary. All cars will under go a health check by our technicians to ensure not only the engine but other important parts of the car are up to standard and have no neglect.
